Introduction
Pastors need to have a balanced ministry, teaching and exhorting the saints, as well as refuting false teachers and teachings. Here, Paul tells Titus to remind 3 groups of people of their obligations to the Lord.
The Aged Saints, vv. 1-3
A. The Aged Men, v. 2
- Be Sober, vigilant
- Be Grave, worthy of respect
- Be Temperate, self-controlled
- Be Sound (healthy) in faith
- Be an Example of love and patience
B. The Aged Women, v. 3
- Be Holy in behavior
- Do not be gossips
- Do not be drunkards
- Be an Example and a Teacher to younger women
The Young Men and Women, vv. 4-8
A. The Young Women
- Be Sober, vigilant
- Love your husbands and children
- Be Discreet / Self-controlled
- Be Chaste and Modest
- Be a Homemaker
- Be Good and Kindhearted
- Be Obedient / submissive to your husbands, so that the Word of God be not blasphemed.
B. The Young Men
- Be Sober, vigilant
- Be an Example of Good Works
- a. in doctrine
- b. in worthiness of respect
- c. in sincerity
- d. in good speech, lest the world have proof of evil against you
The Servants, vv. 9-15
A. Slaves must obey and control their tongue: “Don’t talk back!”
B. Slaves must not steal, but prove themselves trustworthy.
C. Slaves’ lives must be an adornment of God’s doctrine, lest they bring reproach against Christ.
Conclusion
A. The Grace of God is not a license to sin.
B. Three tenses of the Christian life:
- God’s grace redeems all who believe, v. 11
- Teaching us / God’s grace reforms us, v. 12
- God’s grace rewards us, v. 13
We are a purchased people, a purified people, and a practicing people, “zealous of good works.”
