Jeremiah 6 outlines God’s justification for judgment against Judah. God continued to extend salvation, but they rejected it completely.
Jeremiah 6 Key Word: “Flee”
Key Verse: v. 3
“The shepherds (Babylonians) with their flocks (armies) shall come unto her; they shall pitch their tents against her round about; they shall feed every one in his place.”
FLEE BEFORE THE ENEMY INVASION, vv. 1-5
A. Flee out of Jerusalem
B. Blow the trumpet in Tekoa (sounds like shofar call)
C. Signal fire in Beth-haccarem (House of the Vineyard): method of night communication with Babylonian armies.
D. Delicate and sofisticated daughter of Zion is no match for an army of men.
E. Day goes away, the shadows of evening are lengthening = Time is running out.
F. The invaders attack at night.
SET A SIEGE AGAINST JERUSALEM, vv. 6-8
A. The siege against Jerusalem was directed by God. Why?
B. Ryken said, “Jerusalem is Sin City. There is always a fresh supply of evil welling up like poison within her and overflowing into her streets.”
C. God invites: “Be instructed in the wisdom of God or be desolate.”
THE FULNESS OF GOD’S FURY, vv. 9-12
A. The Babylonians will pick you clean.
B. Jeremiah’s dilemma: “To whom shall I speak and give warning, that they may hear?”
They have uncircumcised ears
The Word of God is a reproach to them
They have no delight in it.
C. God is sick of holding judgment in. It will affect people of all ages. None will be exempt.
THE SINS OF PROPHETS AND PRIESTS, vv. 13-15
A. Prophets and priests are corrupt and money hungry.
B. Prophets and priests give false hope: “Peace, peace,” when there is no peace.
C. Prophets and priests are not ashamed of people’s sins.
WISDOM AVAILABLE BUT REJECTED
A. “Stand in the ways of the old paths and find rest for your souls,” Jeremiah 6 : 16.
B. The people said, “We will not.”
C. God announces Judah’s rejection of wisdom, vv. 18-19.
D. God’s hot judgment falls as a stumblingblock.
