Jeremiah 3 compares Israel’s idolatry or spiritual adultery as grounds for divorce. While Judah witnessed Israel’s destruction, Judah did not learn the lesson.

The Illustration, Jeremiah 3:1-4

A. The Law of Divorce, Deuteronomy 24:1-4

1. A man divorces his wife.

2. She marries another man.

3. The woman should not go back to her first husband. It would defile the land.

B. Israel’s Spiritual Adultery resulted in drought and famine.

C. Judah witnessed this, and did not learn the lesson.

The Invitation

A. The Lord’s Appeal, vv. 12-22a

1. Israel must confess her sin and repent, vv. 12-15.

2. The Lord will receive returning Israel

3. The Blessings, vv. 16-22a

    a. That day will be when the Lord establishes His throne in Jerusalem.

    b. The focus of woship will be the Lord, not the Ark of the Covenant.

    c. Israel and Judah will be a united kingdom again.

B. Jeremiah’s Prediction, vv. 22b-25: Israel will one day repent and return to the Lord.
