Joy of Christ’s Kingdom
Isaiah 9 Introduction
A. Ahaz refused to trust God’s promise.
Instead, he made a military alliance with Assyria, robbing God’s Temple to pay for their protection (see 2 Chronicles 28 and Isaiah 7).
B. God described the Assyrian invasion as darkness.
C. God sends a message of Good News–God Himself will rule.
Thesis: The rule of Christ’s Kingdom brings joy, v. 3.
The Joy of the Lord’s Light, v. 2.
A. Light replaces death with life, v. 2 & John 1:4.
B. Light reveals the glory of God in Jesus Christ, 2 Corinthians 4:6.
C. Light reveals God, 1 John 1:5.
The Joy of the Lord’s Liberty, v. 4.
A. Christ frees us from sin, Romans 6:16.
B. Christ frees us from death, 2 Timothy 1:10.
C. Christ frees us from legalism, Galatians 5:1.
The Joy of the Lord’s Government, v. 6.
A. Christ will bring integrity to government, v. 6.
- The term “Wonderful” designates One Who is Supernatural, Judges 13:18.
- The term “Counselor” describes One Who gives guidance.
a. In His 1st Advent, Christ guides us to eternal life.
b. In His 2nd Advent, Christ guides us with perfect wisdom.
B. Christ will bring justice to government, v. 6, –>Mighty God.

C. Christ will bring stability to government, v. 6, –>eternity.
- The term “Everlasting Father” describes the Eternal God Who provides, guards, and cares for His people.
- The term “Prince of Peace” describes God Who brings true peace, wholeness, and tranquility.
Conclusion
Isaiah 9 describes Christ’s kingdom in the hearts of those who trust Him. The Gospel is that Jesus will rule the world one day. But right now, He rules the lives of those who surrender to Him in faith.
A. We can experience the joy of the Lord’s light.
B. We can experience the joy of the Lord’s liberty.
C. We can experience the joy of the Lord’s government.
Ahaz sacrifices Immanuel, God with him, by refusing to believe. God’s promise is now ours by faith.
