Introduction
A. Moab descended from the son of the incestuous relationship between Lot and one of his daughters, Genesis 19:30-38.
B. Moabites were enemies of Israel.
1. Balak, king of Moab, hired Balaam to curse Israel, Numbers 22-25.
2. Eglon, king of Moab, oppressed Israel in the days of the Judges, Judges 3:12-30.
3. During the reigns of Saul and David, Moab was under the control of Israel.
4. Subsequent kings of Israel lost their control over Moab.
C. Moabites were related to Israel, so God instructed Israel not to destroy Moab, Deuteronomy 2:9.
1. King David’s grandmother, Ruth, was from Moab.
2. King David entrusted his parents to the protection of the king of Moab while he ran from Saul, 1 Samuel 22:3-4.
The Suffering of Moab, vv. 1, 9; 16:1-5, 13-14
A. Two Key Cities, Ar and Kir, will be destroyed in one night, v. 1.
B. Moabite women will be abandoned like homeless birds, 16:1-5.
C. Within three years, few Moabites will be left alive, 16:13-14.
