The Fall of Babylon, vv. 1-23
A. The Plunder of Babylon, vv. 1-2
1. Jacob will return to the land.
2. Jacob will oppress their oppressors.
B. The Proverb against Babylon, vv. 3-23
1. The scepter of the oppressor is broken!, vv. 4-5.
2. Creation rejoices at the destruction of Babylon, vv. 6-9.
3. Hell and its inhabitants rise to meet and taunt Babylon, vv. 10-20.
4. The Lord will obliterate Babylon from existence, vv. 21-23.
C. The Parable of Babylon’s King, vv. 3-23
1. The wicked spirit possessing Babylon’s King’s body is Satan, Lucifer, v. 12. Satan is the only one who has fallen from heaven (Luke 10:18).
2. Satan is the only one in Scripture other than Christ and angels who are called a morning star, Job 38:7, Ezekiel 28:11-17, Revelation 22:16.
3. Lucifer, a spirit being, is the only entity who ascended to heaven to exalt his throne above God. Earthly man could not do this.
4. Lucifer, the enemy of God and His people, will one day be defeated.
5. Satan’s four falls:
a. Satan fell from glorified to profane, Ezekiel 28:14-16.
b. Satan will fall from having access to heaven (Job 1:12; 1 Kings 22:21; Zechariah 3:1) to being restricted on the earth (Revelation 12:9).
c. Satan will fall from his place on earth to the bottomless pit for 1000 years, Revelation 20:1-3.
d. Satan will finally fall from the bottomless pit to the lake of fire for eternity, Revelation 20:10.
The Fall of Assyria, vv. 24-27
A. God’s thoughts are as good as actions, v. 24.
B. God’s thoughts toward His people are peace and hope, Jeremiah 29:11.
C. God’s thoughts toward enemies of His people are destruction, see 2 Kings 19:35.
The Fall of Philistia, vv. 28-31
A. Warning: Do not rejoice at the humbling of God’s people.
B. Warning: Worse judgment will befall Palestine.
