Thesis: Although the Holy Spirit was selective and temporary in the Old Testament, His ministry after Pentecost is universal to all believers and permanent.

The Ministry of the Holy Spirit before Pentecost–”with you.”

A. The Holy Spirit Indwelt Certain Believers Selectively.

  1. The Spirit was “in” certain chosen ones. a. Joseph, Genesis 41:38 b. Joshua, Numbers 27:18 c. Daniel, Daniel 4:8
  2. The Spirit “came upon” certain Israelites, e.g. the judges.
  3. The Spirit “filled” certain one with talents, e.g. Bezalel, Exodus 31:3

B. The Holy Spirit’s Indwelling Ministry Was Temporary.

  1. Samson was enabled by the Spirit until God withdrew the Spirit, Judges 16:20
  2. The Spirit came upon Saul mightily, and then withdrew, 1 Samuel 16:14.
  3. After his sin, David pleaded with God not to withdraw His Spirit from him, Psalm 51:11.

C. The Holy Spirit’s Indwelling Did Not Baptize Israel into the Body of Christ, Acts 1:5.

The Ministry of the Holy Spirit after Pentecost–”in you.”

A. The Holy Spirit Indwells Every Believer, 1 Corinthians 3:16.

B. The Holy Spirit Baptizes Believers into the Body of Christ, Acts 1:5.

C. The Holy Spirit’s Indwelling Is Permanent, John 7:2\37-39.

The Ministry of the Holy Spirit–”around you”–Restraint of Sin, Genesis 6:3
