Matthew 27:21-27
Thesis: Humanity crucified Jesus, but they did not take His life.
Humanity scourged Jesus.
A. Scourging was reserved for murderers and traitors.
B. The scourge was a leather whip with pieces of bone and metal imbedded in its thongs.
C. With each stroke of the scourge, flesh was cut and stripped off one’s back.
Humanity crucified Jesus.
A. The condemned carried the crossbeam to the place of their execution.
- The hands of the condemned were nailed to the crossbeam and lifted up and attached to the upright beam.
- The feet of the condemned were nailed to the upright beam.
- The weight of the condemned was supported by a peg, astride where the victim sat.
B. The condemned died after two or three days after suffering thirst, exhaustion, exposure, and finally, asphyxiation.
