Exodus 12:3-13 and 1 Corinthians 5:6-8

Introduction

Thesis: The Passover prefigures Christ’s saving sacrifice.

The Lord Was Without Fault.

A. The lamb was tested by separation, Exodus 12:5-6.

B. The Lamb was tested by Pilate, who declared Him innocent, John 18:38.

The Lord Was Slain, Exodus 12:7, 13.

A. The blood propitiates sin.

B. The blood protects believers from judgment.

C. The blood emancipates believers from slavery.

The Lord Is Remembered in a Feast, Exodus 12:14 and 1 Corinthians 11:26.

A. The Lord instituted the Lord’s Supper at a Passover feast.

  1. Christ is the paschal Lamb Who takes away sin.
  2. Christ is the unleavened bread, Who has no taint of sin.
  3. Christ is the bitter herb, reminding us of the bitterness of slavery to sin. Christ became sin for us (2 Corinthians 5:21).

B. The Church celebrated the Lord’s Supper at an Agape feast.

C. We celebrate the Lord’s Passover by:

  1. Trusting the blood of Christ to save us by faith;
  2. Feasting on the Word of God. Christ is the Living Word; the Written Word is the Bible.

Conclusion

Read 1 Corinthians 5:7-8 in preparation for the Lord’s Supper.
