Romans 1:18 and 3:21-28
Thesis: The propitiation of Christ atones man’s sin and reconciles him to God.
God Is Holy and He Hates Sin.
A. The Tent of the Tabernacle separated Holy God from sinful man.
B. The Veil of the Holy of Holies separated Holy God from sinful priest.
God Is Just and He Condemns Sin.
A. The Atonement cover of the Ark of the Covenant was the Judgment Seat of Holy God.
B. The gold covering of the atonement cover represented the Glory of Holy God.
C. The Judgment of Holy God condemned sin and the sinner.
God Is Love and He Loves the Sinner.
A. God provided blood expiation of animal sacrifices to “cover over” the sins of sinful man.
B. The blood expiation turned the Judgment Seat into a Mercy Seat.
C. Problems arose:
- Sins bled through their coverings over time.
- How can God be just and at the same time justify the sinner?
D. The just demands of Holy God must be satisfied by a perfect and innocent human substitute, Jesus Christ.
- The Propitiation of Christ justifies the sinner, Romans 5:6-11.
- The Propitiation of Christ sanctifies the saints, 1 Corinthians 6:11.
- The Propitiation of Christ glorifies Holy God.
