The Pastoral Appeal–>5 Encouragements

A Praying Friend, vv. 1-5

A. Facing Death, Paul prayed for Timothy!

B. Facing Death, Paul reminds Timothy to be Thankful!

  1. Godly Heritage–>a Christian family
  2. Genuine Faith–see 1 Samuel 12:23

A Wonderful Gift, vv. 6-7

A. God’s Gift

  1. of Salvation
  2. of Ministry

B. God’s Spirit does not generate fear, Romans 8:15

  1. Holy Spirit gives us power in our lives for ministry
  2. Holy Spirit gives us love, Galatians 5:22
    • a. for Christ
    • b. for the Word
    • c. for the Saints
    • d. for the Lost
  3. Holy Spirit gives us self-control / sound mind
    • a. control over our feelings
    • b. control over our fears

A Holy Calling, vv. 8-11

A. God’s Grace

  1. to save through faith in Christ
  2. to preach, teach, and do missions
  3. to grant power to do the above

B. God’s Purpose

  1. Abolish or take the sting out of death
  2. Give Life and Immortality to light
  3. Empower us to endure suffering with Christ, Philippians 3:10

A Faithful Savior, vv. 12-14

A. Christ is able (literally, powerful):

  1. to keep me, my soul committed to Him
  2. to keep the Gospel that He committed to me

B. Hold Fast to the Form / Pattern / Outline–>Stick with the basic doctrines

A Godly Example, vv. 15-18

A. The Forsakers, see 2 Timothy 4:16

  1. Phygellus, name means “Fugitive”
  2. Hermogenes, name means “Born of Hermes, the devil”
  3. Guy King said: “They couldn’t help their ugly names, but they could have helped their ugly character.”

B. The Faithful Example–>Onesiphorus (means “he who brings profit or help”)

  1. He came to Rome to visit Paul
  2. He was not ashamed to be associated with Paul
  3. Paul says he “was” in Rome. It may be possible that Onesiphorus carried this letter to Timothy
